Presentation
of Flowers
There’s no doubt about it, flower
arranging is an art but that doesn’t mean you have to leave
it to the professional. Anyone can have a go at flower arranging
and you’ll find it’s an enjoyable and rewarding hobby
if you just follow a few simple techniques. One of the main things
to remember is there’s no such thing as a perfect flower
arrangement because each vase or bouquet is a unique art form,
so there’s not much chance you’ll get it wrong.
However, we’ve brought together a few of the most popular
flower presentations to give you a head start and help to make
your floral display one that people will remember. Read on for
the low down on the most popular flower arrangements…
The Dome
For this look you’ll need a round vase and bunch of single,
large head flowers, such as roses, lilies, and tulips. Gather
together a selection of flowers in a range of colours and insert
them one by one into the vase, using a floral frog at the base
of the vase to keep them in place. The flowers round the edge
will then lean over slightly and the ones in the middle will stand
tall giving a rounded, dome-like, look.
The Spiky Look
Choose a mixture of single head flowers, such as roses, lilies,
daffodils, and tulips, and cut the stem of each flower at a slightly
different length. Choose a vase or container with a curvy shape
and place each flower in one by one, starting with the longest
first. Then add the shorter flowers in between and you’ll
achieve a spiky, ragged, look.
Single Stem
Sometimes less is more so why not make your favourite flower the
centrepiece of your room by presenting a single stem, such as
a sunflower, lily, or rose, in a tall, slender vase, or by putting
a multi-headed flower, such as a freesia, carnation spray, and
Lisianthus on the rim of a cup or bowl.
Floater
Choose your favourite flowers and cut the stems to less than an
inch then place the flowers in a large bowl of lukewarm water.
If your flowers do not float, cut a small circle of bubble wrap
and thread the stem through the centre so the flower head floats
on top of the bubble wrap.
There are a few handy tools you should invest in to ensure your
flower arranging is a pleasant and easy experience, such as a
sharp knife or pair of scissors, floral frogs, floral foam, wire
to extend the length of a stem, and florist tape. All these products
are available from UK florists.
You should also remember that you don’t need an expensive
crystal vase for a wonderful flower arrangement. Jugs, teapots,
wine bottles, bowls, mugs and even jam jars can all be used for
displaying flowers.
And once you’ve completed your floral arrangement keep it
looking fresh by removing individual flowers as they die and shorten
the stem of tired or wilting flowers.
